Earlier, because of the long waiting periods, Mahindra had to release a press release stating that the waiting period could range between five to seven months depending on the variant that the buyer opts for. Aravind, a Twitter user revealed his disappointment towards Mahindra and asked Anand Mahindra, Chairman of Mahindra Group about the long waiting periods of the Thar as he has been told that the waiting period of the 2020 Thar is now 9 months. There is no doubt that the 2020 Thar has exceeded the expectations for many people, which could be one of the reasons for such high demand. However, Anand Mahindra has also replied to the Twitter user by saying that they are working round the clock to raise the output.

Dr. Goenka, Managing Director of Mahindra and Mahindra Limited has already stated that they have already increased the production capacity by 50 percent more than what was initially planned for the 2020 Thar. However, due to the production constraints, customers will have to wait for their Thar. Currently, the highest demand is for the LX Variant with a petrol engine mated to an automatic transmission. Earlier the Thar was not offered with a petrol engine. However, now it offered with a new 2.0-litre mStalion petrol engine which is turbocharged. The engine is capable of producing 150 PS of max power and a peak torque output of 300 Nm if you opt for the manual gearbox and 320 Nm if you opt for the automatic gearbox. Mahindra is also offering the 2020 Thar with a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine which is capable of producing 130 PS of max power and 300 Nm of peak torque. It also comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Being aimed towards off-roaders, Mahindra is offering 4×4 drivetrain and low range gearbox as standard.

One of the biggest reasons for this is that Mahindra has transformed the 2020 Thar to perform off-road as well as on-road. Now, it comes with front-row seating which is one of the reasons that people can finally consider it as a daily driver. The comfort levels are much better than the previous generation. Now, the SUV is much more composed when compared, the previous generation would toss occupants around on bad roads.
