New Toyota Fortuner 2024 – First Impressions & In-depth Look

The Toyota Fortuner has been a staple in the Indian SUV market ever since its launch back in 2009. With robust build quality, potent diesel engines and unparalleled off-road capabilities, the Fortuner appeals to those looking for a no-nonsense workhorse SUV.

However, 14 years into its lifecycle–9 for the current gen–the Fortuner is beginning to show its age in some areas. But there’s good news – Toyota is developing an all-new generation of the Fortuner that will launch in 2024. Recently unveiled in international markets, the new Toyota Fortuner 2024 gives us a glimpse of what to expect when it arrives on Indian shores.

All-New Design Language

The most evident change is the Toyota Fortuner 2024’s all-new exterior design. It adopts Toyota’s latest design language first seen on the smaller RAV4. The new Fortuner 2024 gets a much bolder front fascia with a chunky grille flanked by sleeker headlamps. The front bumper is also redesigned and gets integrated fog lamp enclosures.

In profile, the cleaner surfacing makes the new model look far more modern than the outgoing version. The rear retains the basic elements like the vertical tail lamps while incorporating newer design touches for a more cohesive look. Overall, the new generation Fortuner drops the old-school charm for a more global contemporary design that appeals to young SUV buyers.

Feature-Loaded Cabin

The interior is where the new Fortuner 2024 sees the most significant upgrades. Drawing inspiration from the overseas-spec Toyota models, the SUV’s cabin looks far more premium now. The dashboard layout is driver-focused with a free-standing touchscreen taking center stage. The new infotainment system offers Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity with over-the-air updates.

Toyota has also added relatively premium features like powered front seats, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, wireless phone charging and a 360-degree camera. Safety has also been enhanced with additions like blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and up to 7 airbags on range-topping variants.

While India-spec details will be revealed closer to launch, expect a well-equipped cabin in line with other Toyota SUVs like the Urban Cruiser Hyryder.

Fortuner 2024 Enhanced Practicality

Dimensionally the new generation Fortuner has grown slightly larger. The new model measures 4,795mm long (+60mm), 1,855mm wide and 1,835mm tall with a 2,850mm wheelbase. This translates to marginally improved interior space, especially for third row passengers.

Toyota also claims improved ingress/egress, better forward visibility and more usable storage spaces within the cabin. The boot capacity stays unchanged at 1092-litres with all rear seats folded. Overall, the new 2024 Fortuner builds upon the outgoing model’s core strengths of space, practicality and durability.

New Engine Options in 2024 Fortuner

This is where things get interesting. While international-spec Fortuners get a range of petrol and diesel engines, India is most likely to receive two powertrains:

2.8-litre diesel with mild-hybrid

Displacing 2,755cc, the turbocharged diesel motor of Fortuner New Model 2024 produces 201 bhp and 500 Nm paired to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The engine features a new 48-volt mild hybrid system. Essentially it gets a larger starter motor that integrates the functionality of an electric motor to supplement acceleration. This allows for quieter cold starts, some all-electric driving capability in start-stop traffic and regenerative braking to boost fuel efficiency by 5-10%.

2.0-litre turbo-petrol

This engine debuts on the Toyota Fortuner 2024 for the new generation model. Displacing 1,998cc the four-cylinder turbo-petrol produces 235 bhp and 400 Nm when paired to the automatic transmission. It focuses more on outright performance rather than efficiency. This petrol engine option finally gives customers an alternative to diesel for the new Fortuner 2024.

Both engine options are expected to be offered in 4×2 and 4×4 drivetrain configurations depending on the variant. Off-road hardware like limited slip differentials, hill descent control should be offered based on grades. Also Read: 2024 Toyota Fortuner Diesel 4×2 Automatic Updated Model Video

New Fortuner 2024 Expected Launch Date & Price

The New Toyota Fortuner 2024 is expected to have its India launch by mid-2024. Prices are expected to see a significant increase over the current model considering the extensive upgrades.

Expect Fortuner prices to start from Rs. 32 lakh and range up to Rs. 48 lakh (ex-showroom) for the range-topping trim. At this price point the New Toyota Fortuner 2024 will renew its rivalry with SUVs like the Ford Endeavour and upcoming new-gen Skoda Kodiaq. Recently, a walkaround video of 2024 Toyota Fortuner luxury SUV base variant is also released in which all the featured of the car are shown.

Verdict

The 2024 Toyota Fortuner’s evolution over the years has made it a dependable, quintessential SUV tailored to Indian requirements. The new generation model builds upon the nameplate’s core qualities but also ushers it into the modern era with its contemporary design, premium interior and new engine options.

Early impressions suggest Toyota has focused on key areas like features, safety and practicality that Indian SUV buyers prioritize. Although the pricing may see a steep increase, expect the Fortuner to be as popular as ever when it launches next year.
