Maruti Jimny Vs Gypsy In A Classic Tug Of War [Video]

maruti jimny vs gypsy tug of war

The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is the successor to the legendary Gypsy which was sold from 1998 to 2018. The Gypsy was a raw off roader but on the other hand the Jimny is loaded with all the modern day features. Today, we will see both of these cars competing in a tug of war challenge.

The video for the same is uploaded on a YouTube channel names as Small Town Rider. The YouTuber has funnily titled this video as “Baap aur bete ki ladai mai kiski hogi jeet” (who will win in the fight of a dad and his son). He has referred to the Gypsy as the dad and the Jimny as the son.

First let’s talk about the engine and power. The legendary Gypsy is powered by a 1.3-litre engine which produces 80 PS of power and 103 Nm of torque. In contrast the Jimny is powered by a bigger and more powerful 1.5-litre petrol engine which manages to deliver 103 PS of power and 134 Nm of torque.

Please note that power figures are not the only factor which plays a major role in tug of war. Type of tires, terrain, driver and the weight of the vehicle are some other factors which are responsible for the win or loss of a car. Even the host mentions that they are doing this for fun and this race does not provide much value.

The host tries a steep obstacle from Jimny which he mentions that the Gypsy took 3-4 tries to cross and the Thar crossed it in a single attempt. Jimny failed to perform and it took the car three tries to cross this obstacle.

The performance is quite disappointing as the car was fitted with MT tires. After the Jimny, they try the same obstacle with Gypsy which completely fails to cross it.

Now, let’s talk about the tug of war. Both the cars are connected with each other using shackles and towing strap. For this first round, both the cars are kept on 2 High. The Gypsy is fitted with AT tires while the Jimny has MT tires.

Both the cars weigh extra as the Jimny is fitted with a roof rack and the gypsy is fitted with rally cabin. The Jimny easily pulls the Gypsy for the first two three seconds but after that the Gypsy stays stiff in its position and starts to pull the Jimny, winning the race. Once the Gypsy started pulling the Jimny, the Jimny fails to hold its position even for a single second.

For the second round, both the cars are put into 4 Low. This time around, the Jimny easily pulls the Gypsy. The Jimny does not give a chance to the Gypsy for pulling and easily wins the race. As compared to the first round, the Jimny did not struggle at all.

While the Gypsy was around for over 30 years in the Indian market, beginning from the early 1980s, it’s the Jimny that’s now the most affordable 4X4 SUV that money can buy in India. Thus, it’s the spiritual successor of the Gypsy.
