Hyundai India To Soon Introduce Twin-Cylinder Tech In CNG Cars

With the rise in fuel prices, people are looking for alternative options when it comes to cars. Most manufacturers have stopped producing small diesel cars and are offering CNG versions instead. India’s second-largest car manufacturer, Hyundai, is also one among them. They offer several models in the market with factory-fitted CNG kits. It looks like Hyundai has now taken inspiration from Tata and is planning to introduce the twin-cylinder tech in their CNG cars. Hyundai has now filed a trademark for the name Hy-CNG & Hy-CNG Duo, which could possibly be the name of Hyundai’s CNG line up of cars.

Hyundai trademarked the names Hy-CNG and Hy-CNG Duo in May. This could possibly mean that Hyundai is planning to introduce a new name for the CNG models. The Hy-CNG will be offered with the conventional CNG cylinder in the boot. The CNG Duo is likely to be the name given to the cars that come with dual-cylinder technology. Hyundai is yet to make any official confirmation about this news.

This dual-cylinder technology features not one but two small cylinders in the boot of the car. This helps in better space management. It is more convenient than the regular cylinder versions as it opens up more space for luggage.

Hyundai is expected to offer this twin-cylinder technology with Aura, Grand i10 Nios, and Exter in the near future. The Nios and Aura already come with factory-fitted CNG kits.

In fact, the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios is currently the most affordable CNG car on sale in India. The price for the Grand i10 Nios CNG starts at Rs 7.68 lakh, ex-showroom.

Tata was the first brand to come up with the twin-cylinder technology. Tata currently offers this twin-cylinder CNG tech with their popular models like Tiago, Tigor, Punch, and Altroz. It was introduced almost a year ago and quickly gained popularity among buyers.

The main reason for this gaining popularity is its convenience. Generally, when there is a large CNG cylinder in the boot, it takes up most of the space in the boot.

This affects the luggage space, and people with CNG cars are often forced to carry bags in the cabin. However, with the twin-cylinder technology, this issue was resolved. The cylinders are neatly tucked in the boot of the car.

The brands usually remove the spare wheel to make more room for these small cylinders. This way, when the cylinders are installed in place, there is only a small bump over the loading lip, and occupants can keep their luggage on the cylinder cover. It needs to be seen if Hyundai is planning to implement the same tech or if there will be anything different.

This is a more convenient way of installing CNG cylinders, and we won’t be surprised if India’s largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki, also decides to do the same with their CNG cars.

It needs to be seen if Hyundai will be offering the new technology in their existing CNG models only or if they are planning to expand it into new models like Venue.
