Tata’s latest product, the Altroz Racer, was launched in the market recently. It is currently the most affordable performance hatchback one can buy in India. The Tata Altroz Racer has now set a new record at the CoASTT (Coimbatore Autosports and Transport Trust) Race Track. The performance hatchback has set a record lap time at the race track and has become the fastest Indian hatchback. The Altroz Racer set the record by completing the lap in just 2 minutes and 21.74 seconds.

The car was driven by none other than India’s number one racer, Narain Karthikeyan. Several videos of him driving the Altroz Racer hatchback on the CoASTT track have been released. Tata even released a TV commercial featuring Narain. The Altroz Racer has made it to the India Book of Records (IBR) and become the ‘Fastest Indian Hatchback’.

The Instagram post shared by India Book of Records says, “Narain Karthikeyan drove a Tata Altroz Racer to victory at the CoASTT Racing Track in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, setting an unbeatable lap time of 2 minutes and 21.74 seconds. Beating competitors like the Hyundai i20 N-Line and Maruti Suzuki Fronx Turbo, this achievement is a testament to speed and precision.”

Tata Altroz Racer

It is the most powerful iteration of the only premium hatchback from Tata. Tata is also the only manufacturer in the segment still offering a diesel engine option. The Altroz Racer directly competes with cars like the Hyundai i20 N Line.

Tata is offering the Altroz Racer in Atomic Orange, Avenue White, and Pure Grey shades. All three shades have a blacked-out bonnet and roof, which add to the sporty character.

Similarly, racing stripes can also be seen on the bonnet and roof of this hatchback. A Racer badge can be seen on the fender. Inside, the theme of the cabin has been changed. It gets darker shade interiors with racing stripes.

The seats also have Racer branding on them. The main change inside the cabin is the new 10.25-inch touchscreen. This is the same unit seen in other Tata models like the Nexon and Harrier.

The regular version of the Altroz also gets this new screen in the higher variants. Tata is also offering features like ventilated seats, which is a segment-first feature. There are highlighted trims around the AC vents and gear lever too. The car continues to have the 16-inch alloy wheels finished in gunmetal grey.

Tata is offering the Altroz Racer in R1, R2, and R3 variants. Regarding the engine, the Tata Altroz Racer uses the same 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, turbocharged engine offered in the Nexon. The 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine generates 120 PS and 170 Nm of peak torque.

It is currently offered with a 6-speed manual transmission only. There are reports that Tata is considering offering a DCA transmission with the Altroz Racer. Prices for the Tata Altroz Racer start at Rs 9.49 lakh, ex-showroom, and go up to Rs 10.99 lakh, ex-showroom.

The Altroz Racer’s direct rival is the Hyundai i20 N-Line. The i20 N-Line offers a 7 speed twin clutch (DCT) automatic gearbox in addition to the 6 speed manual. The sooner that Tata Motors brings in the twin clutch automatic gearbox, the better, as the Indian market across segments is shifting towards automatic gearbox equipped cars in a big way. While manual gearboxes appeal mostly to driving enthusiasts, their numbers are in the minority.
