Performance cars are rarities in India because of the low interest of the market towards them. However, in recent years the performance cars have started moving forward. In 2018, we will see a lot of new performance-oriented affordable cars on the market. Here are they.
Maruti Vitara Brezza petrol
The Brezza is the highest selling sub 4-metre compact SUV in India. Maruti has a long waiting period on the vehicle. The Brezza was launched only in diesel variants initially and Maruti had expressed that they are willing to launch a petrol powered Brezza in the future. Maruti Vitara Brezza petrol is in works and the SUV is expected to get unveiled at the Auto Expo 2018.
The car will be powered by the same 1.0-litre three-cylinder Boosterjet engine that powers the Baleno RS in the current lineup. The engine is expected to produce around 110 Bhp on the Brezza. Maruti is also planning to launch an automatic version of the Brezza as right now the only manual transmission is available.
Maruti Swift Sport
This will be the first Swift Sport to come to India and it will follow the launch of all-new Swift in the market. The Swift Sport is available in the international markets and the new vehicle is expected to launch in India too. The new Swift Sport will be powered by the 1.4-litre turbocharged Boosterjet engine that develops a maximum of 138 Bhp and 230 nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions.
Tata Tiago Sport
The Tiago hatchback has been gaining popularity in the market. The sales have been increasing every month now and the manufacturer also launched the AMT version of the vehicle. Tata is now planning to launch the Tiago Sport and it may come next year. The car will get a body kit with a new bumper that will add sportiness. The 1.2-litre turbocharged engine that powers the Nexon is expected on the Tiago Sport too.
Tata Tigor Sport
Alongside the Tiago, Tata is also planning to launch the Tigor Sport, which is based on the Tiago itself. Details about the engine or the suspension set-up are not out yet but Tata will add more power to the package. The Tigor feels quite underpowered in its current form. With the Sports version, Tata may power with the same 1.5-litre diesel engine that is found under the hood of Nexon. It produces 108 Bhp and 260 Nm of peak torque. However, Tata may add the 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol unit instead too.
Mahindra S201
SsangYong Tivoli, a compact SUV from Mahindra’s subsidiary was supposed to be launched in the Indian market. Due to the low popularity of the brand, Mahindra scrapped the plan. Now Mahindra is working on a new SUV, based on the Tivoli. Internally codenamed as S201, the new vehicle will take on the likes of Ford EcoSport and Maruti Vitara Brezza.
Mahindra is developing the vehicle in-house, but it will get the same platform as the Tivoli. Mahindra has commented that it will not be a rebadge job and the S201 will look quite different from the Tivoli. The S201 will be powered by a newly developed 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine that will make 140 Bhp. The diesel engine will be a 1.5-litre Twin-Scroll turbocharged engine with 125 Bhp on tap.
Ford EcoSport S
Ford recently launched the updated version of the EcoSport. Now a sportier version of the same will be launched soon. Similar to the Figo S and the Aspire S, it will be known as EcoSport S. It’ll be offered with petrol and diesel engines. The car has been already seen in India and the launch is expected to happen sometime soon. The changes are expected to in the suspension department making the EcoSport S much sharper than the regular version. The steering is also expected to be sharper than the regular version of the current model. The exteriors will be more aggressive with blacked out parts and sportier alloy wheels.
