MG Cloud EV Coming Soon: To Challenge Tata Nexon.EV And Mahindra XUV400

MG Cloud EV

MG Motor India announced earlier this year that they will be launching one new vehicle every six months. The first car under this new brand strategy is set to be launched in the second half of 2024. Like many other car manufacturers, the brand is now focusing on electric cars, and this will be reflected in their future launches as well. One of the first cars to be launched under this new strategy is the Cloud EV.

The Cloud EV is not a new product. It is already sold in international markets like Indonesia under the Wuling brand, which is under the parent brand SAIC. The same EV is sold as the Baojun Yunduo in China. When this electric car makes its entry into the Indian market, the name of the car will be changed and it will be sold under the MG branding.

We’ve seen MG give the Comet the same treatment before. The Comet is actually sold as the Wuling Air outside of India. The MG Cloud EV has been spotted testing a couple of times, and from the leaked images, we know how the upcoming model from MG will look. The MG Cloud EV will measure over 4 meters in length – 4.3 meters to be precise.

It gets an MPV-like design and has a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. It is a 5-seater EV that comes with a minimalistic design. The EV also offers flush-fitting door handles, which are becoming more common among cars in India lately. Just like the Comet, there is a thin LED strip that runs the width of the car. The projector or LED headlamps are placed on the bumper, giving it a unique look.

Just like the exterior, the interior of the new MG Cloud EV also features a very minimal-looking cabin design. The cabin is said to be extremely spacious for a 5-seater, and there are the usual features like a large touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, electrically adjustable seats, and so on.

The international version of this EV gets ADAS, a 360-degree camera, and many more features. It remains to be seen if MG will launch the new EV with these modern features.

The MG Cloud EV, which is sold under different names abroad, comes with a variety of battery pack options. The EV is offered with 37.9 kWh and 50.6 kWh battery pack options. The 37.9 kWh battery pack version offers a claimed driving range of 360 km, and the 50.6 kWh battery pack version offers a 460 km range.

The Cloud EV uses a permanent magnet synchronous motor mounted on the front axle. This motor generates 134 PS. At the moment, there is no clarity on which of these versions will be brought to India. The MG Cloud EV is going to be a one-of-a-kind product when it is launched in the market. It is, in fact, a mix of a hatchback and an MPV.

There are no other products that look like this in our market at the moment. The MG Cloud EV is expected to rival the electric version of the Kia Carens when it gets launched sometime in 2025. It would also compete with the likes of Mahindra XUV400 and Tata Nexon.ev. The MG Cloud EV is expected to be priced under Rs 20 lakh.
